The Science of Summer: A Sourcing, Styling, and Care Guide to Linen

To wear linen with confidence is a matter of physics and discipline. Here is our
practical guide to understanding, styling, and maintaining the fiber.

1. The Physics of the Flax Fiber

Linen’s weight and density are measured in GSM (Grams per Square Meter).

  • The Weight: Under 130 GSM, linen is sheer and loses shape. Over 250 GSM, it
becomes heavy and stiff. A midweight 200 GSM is the optimal weight for
apparel—thick enough to drape without a lining, yet open enough for airflow.
  • The Hollow Core: Flax is a bast fiber. Its fibers feature a hollow center
(lumen) that acts as a natural insulator, allowing body heat to circulate
away in the heat and trapping warmth when the temperature drops
  • Moisture Absorption: Linen is highly hygroscopic, absorbing up to 20% of its
weight in moisture before feeling damp, keeping the skin dry.
  • The Slub: Pure, unblended linen features natural slubs (small, irregular
knots in the yarn). These are the authentic fingerprint of the flax plant,
indicating a pure fiber that will soften over time, unlike flat synthetic
        blends.

Shop our 100% linen summer capsule: Our entire inaugural collection is crafted from premium, European-sourced 200 GSM pure linen. Our "Prime a Canvas" colorway (natural off-white) celebrates the raw heritage of the fiber with visible, authentic slubs.  These are visible in on our other colors as well.

2. The Functional Styling Rulebook

Linen creases naturally along movement lines. Looking polished is about managing
those lines through deliberate styling.

1: Choose Trousers Over Skirts for High-Sitting Days. And vice versa

Dress for the occassion. When sitting for long periods, full or wrap skirts tend to bunch and crease intensely in an unpredictable, horizontal fashion across the lap. Trousers drape along the natural vertical lines of the legs, meaning they maintain a more predictable, structured profile when you stand up.

Shop our 100% linen summer capsule: for itineraries with heavy sitting (travel, dining), choose our wide-leg Traveller Pant over the Serenade Skirt or Editor's Skirt to maintain a clean vertical line.

2. Contrast Texture with Structured Polish

Pair soft, unstructured linen with structured accessories and layers. Think structured leather loafers, a minimalist timepiece, a silk scarf, or a clean-lined, structured leather tote bag to anchor the relaxed drape of the fabric.

3. Avoid Tight Fits to Manage Seam Tension

Flax fibers have very low elasticity (stretching only 2-3% before breaking). If a linen garment is fitted too tightly, tension points (hips, thighs, rise) will pull aggressively, creating deep, tight wrinkles and stressing the seams.

A relaxed fit allows the fabric to drape smoothly and  crease gracefully.

Shopping Note: Our Traveller Pant is cut with a fluid, wide-leg silhouette. We recommend sizing up if you're between sizes. Our Editor’s Skirt utilizes an adjustable wrap design to eliminate seam tension entirely.

4: Anchor the Waist to Manage Visual Bulk

Loose, un-tucked linen can swallow your frame and look shapeless. Defining the waist— either through a high-waisted rise or a cropped hem—creates a clear horizontal transition point that balances the fluid volume of the fabric.

Shopping Note: Our capsure high-waisted bottoms are engineered to meet our cropped Architectural Cami exactly at the waistline, defining your silhouette without requiring a bulky tuck.

5. Use a Tailored Layer as a Structural Anchor

A structured, tailored vest or jacket holds its shape at the torso, acting as a visual frame that grounds the fluid movement of wide-leg trousers or full skirts underneath.

Shopping Notes:  Buttoning our structured Atelier Waistcoat Vest
over our wide-leg pants or midi skirts instantly transitions your outfit
from a casual daytime exploration to a polished evening setting.

3. Washing, Drying, Steaming, and Ironing

Linen is bound together by natural plant pectins. Over wash cycles, these
pectins slowly break down under gentle agitation, causing the stiff, raw fibers
to transition into a buttery-soft, fluid drape, while the dyes settle into a
matte patina.

  • Washing: Wash in cold water (max 40°C / 104°F) on a gentle cycle. Use mild, liquid detergent. Powdered detergents can lodge in the coarse weave, stiffening the fabric. Never crowd the machine.
  • Drying: Never tumble dry. The heat and friction permanently shrink and weaken the fibers. Dry flat on a towel or hang on a padded hanger in the shade. Direct sunlight can bleach and weaken natural fibers.
  • Steaming: Steaming is the gentlest way to relax linen fibers without crushing the yarn, preserving the fabric's natural loft and breathability.
  • Ironing: Never iron dry linen, as it will scorch. Iron the garment while it is still damp from the wash, on the reverse side of the fabric to prevent creating a shiny, flat glaze on the face of the cloth.

Voyager Tip: hang your garments in the bathroom while taking a hot shower. The ambient steam will naturally relax the deepest packing creases in our 200 GSM linen, leaving a soft, natural drape ready for the day
